Cicely Tyson

Cicely Tyson is a seasoned actress who captured my heart many many years ago.

I feel like Tyson is the embodiment of a strong African-American woman. As a starting point, she holds an honorary degree from Morehouse College, an all male HBCU.

Tyson is quoted to have said, “Unless a piece really said something, I had no interest in it. I have got to know that I have served some purpose here.” This is powerful, choosing to do something solely based on meaning is a difficult choice given all the other pressures we have to avoid.

Also remarkable, is Tyson’s commitment to keeping her personal details personal. We know so much about so many celebrities these days that they rarely seem like real people. However, by staying away from all these random tidbits of information, Tyson has preserved a sense of genuineness about her life.

As I mentioned in the opening, Tyson captured my heart through her characters and I have loved her in every role I have seen her portray. I feel strength when I look at her and hear her speak and that is what makes her wonderful.
