Garrett Morgan is perhaps my favorite inventor of days past. His contributions are still very important and instrumental in our society and I do not know many (if there is one at all) who can imagine a society without his contributions. Morgan worked on developing the formula for chemical hair straightening, an early version of a gas mask, and improving sewing machines and traffic signals. He holds several patents and did all of this with only a sixth grade level education.
Today, I hope that no child regardless of the type of community or home they are born into has to stop schooling at the 6th grade. Making it past that level should be encouragement to children that they can do great things and be great people. So often we unintentionally discourage people of all ages of seeking opportunities and chasing dreams because it is a risk or a long-shot. However, there is so much potential to be embraced in this world that we need to lock in.
